About Bernard Unett

In 1970 Unett took part in the London to Mexico World cup rally, his first rally since his club attempt in 1961. Unett was mechanic / driver in a three man prvately entered team, using a works prepared Hillman Hunter. They got as far as Yugoslavia before crashing out in a collision with a wood truck. In 1968 A Hilman Hunter had won the Daily Express London to Sydney Marathon. Chrysler, having taken over Rootes in 1966, closed down the competition department ten months after their big win with one of two works entered Hunters in the marathon. It was re-opened in 1972 with Unett in charge and out of retirment. 1973 saw Unett have great success in the Hunter (opposite) winning 27 out of 29 races, sharing the Castrol G.P. 1 title. He also had a class win on his first tour of Britain.

Bernard Unett had a brief go at formula 3 in 1967, probably using a Lotus 31 (opposite), his best place being third at Mallory park. In 1971, to end his temporary retirment, Unett planned a big come back in formula 5000. He did a deal to buy Derek Williams' Lola T1 42. Unfortunately, Williams rolled the car and was killed. Unett immediately folded the deal. "If that was'nt an omen I don't know what is. I'm a little superstitious about that sort of thing" he said. He used the same 'lucky' driving boots for years, although they became full of holes.
