About Bernard Unett
Bernard Unett will allways be best remembered for his driving behind the wheel of his works Hillman Avengers, starting in 1972. It was the first year of Group One racing in the U.K. He won the 'Britax' series in his 1500 GT Hillman Avenger, backed by MOPAR, the Chrysler parts division. In 1974 Unett won the group 1 Saloon car championship (now called touring car Championship) in a 1600 GT Avenger, with exciting dices with Roger Ball and Alec Poole, his fellow members of the Chrysler team managed by Des O'Dell. In 1974 Unett also finished first in class and eleventh overall in the 'Access' R.A.C. Tourest Trophy at Silverstone, and first in class, thirteenth overall, in the 2000 mile Tour of Britain. Unett had more sucess in 1976 and 1977 with further outright wins of British Touring car championship in a Chrysler Avenger, (opposite with unett).
Bernard Unett was involved with the development of the Chrysler Sunbeam Lotus in 1978 and went on to rally in the car. The car was lanched in March 1979, but by the time deliveries started, Peugeot had bought Chrysler UK. and changed the company name to Talbot. The car, as the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, went on to international rallying from 1979 to 1982 and won the world championship in 1981. It's best know achivement was first place the 1980 Lombard R.A.C. rally in the hands of Henri Toivonen, the Sunbeam also securing third and forth place.
